Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but they can happen. If you have an orthodontic emergency, the first thing you should do is contact our orthodontist. In the meantime, there are some things you can do to help relieve pain or discomfort and prevent further damage.

If you have a loose bracket or band:

  • Use dental wax to cover the sharp edges of the bracket or band.
  • If the bracket or band comes completely off, save it and bring it with you to your next appointment.

If you have a poking wire:

  • Try pushing the wire back into place with a cotton swab or pencil eraser.
  • If the wire cannot be pushed back into place, cover the end of the wire with dental wax or a cotton ball.

If you are in a lot of pain:

  • Take over-the-counter pain medication like Ibuprofen.
  • Place a cold compress on the outside of your mouth to help reduce swelling.

If you have a serious injury to your mouth:

  • Apply direct pressure to bleeding areas with a clean gauze pad.
  • Apply ice to the injured area to help reduce swelling.
  • Seek medical attention immediately.
